CalStar - September 2022

CalStar 2022
Al and I arrived on Wednesday and we were just about the only folks there. Al wasn't supposed to lift anything heavy, so here he is with his massive new scope :)

Bill always sets up under the best shade tree. Makes him one of the most popular guys

My next door neighbor, Jeff. We were discussing what it takes to make a great astro photo - $$$

I took this with my cell phone through my Lunt solar telescope. The Sun was super active this week. On Thursday I counted 15 prominences. The surface was alive with action - numerous sun spots and large filaments. Note the large prominence at 10 O'clock. It grew to about twice what it is in this photo. then, on Friday night sometime it separated and began to dissipate.

The heat (around 90 all week takes its toll and makes naps are a required activity. That's me relaxing for a while just after sunset.

Breakfast at Chez Dan's. Dan and his buddies prepare a breakfast feast for CalSters. Eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, hash browns and orange juice. Just drop some cash in the tip jar. Food always tastes best outdoors - especially if you don't have to fix it yourself :)

Fine dining at its best.

Unfortunately, Al had to leave on Saturday morning, and of course, the seeing was great that night.

This year Bill fixed pizza - yeast dough and all. A deer found the ingredients tasty and raided the table a couple of times.

A Monterey high school does its astronomy class field trip at the same time that we're there. The students pick their favorite objects to learn about. Then they come over to the telescopes at night and we show those objects to them in the telescopes. Here are a couple checking out the Sun on the solar scope.

Here are some of the students that braved the heat to check out the Sun.

On Saturday, we watched the launch of the last launch of the Delta 4 Heavy Rocket. It was carrying a military spy satellite.

Here is a short video of the launch from CalStar.
